SOUNDS IMPORTED SHOW 12/6/09: Live Carnatic (South Indian Classical) Music Performance

This past Sunday we had a stellar performance from the amazing South Indian classical vocalist (and also UM audio engineering grad student) Krithika Rajagopal. Providing a stellar accompaniment for her on the Mridangam drum was her friend and fellow UM student Saheelan Sinnarajah. Here are the songs that they performed in order:

Sounds Imported! 11/15: Greece

This past sunday I played a bunch of awesome music from Greece. I don't have the exact playlist, but some of the CD's I played music from were:

Myrtate: Traditional Songs from Greece

I also played some awesome tracks from a 1972 National Geographic vinyl record called simply "The Music of Greece" which you can check out here.

In addition to that I played some tracks from vinyl from 1968 called "Bouzoukee: The Music of Greece" led by Bouzoukee player Iordanis Tsomidis , Speros Kapos on baklama, George Karathanasis on accordion, Alex Panos on Guitar, Haralambas Papafogos and a bass player named James Bond! Check it!

Ghulam Ali

My awesome roommate found this tape by Pakistani singer Ghulam Ali at a local thrift shop here in Miami. Ghulam Ali is an amazing singer of classical Hindustani music and he is usually performing on vocals and harmonium, along with violin, sitar, and tablas players to accompany him. Here's the tape:

their fm worldbeat community. If you're a livejournal member (no money involved here it's free to sign up) you can join the group and check out the hundreds of amazing world music albums they post to that group. I've come across so much good/strange/beautiful music from that group that I've eventually used on my radio show, so I highly recommend it! Right now they've got 16 albums of Native American music, A Buddha Bar compilation, a Swedish band called Diablo Swing Orchestra that puts their genre as "Avant-garde/symphonic/operatic metal" and that's just the first 3!

On that community blog I found that amazon.com has a bunch of free world music MP3's up. Just go to amazon.com and type in "free world music mp3" in the search bar and you'll find them. Pretty awesome stuff. A bunch from Putumayo and some other world compilations.

I stumbled across this Indian music site dishant.com that has all different styles of Indian music categorized by region and style which can give you a pretty good overview of the vast range of music that enormous country has to offer. The mp3 streams are not the highest quality, but what they lack in quality, they at least compensate for in the huge quantity of music available. If you sign up for the site (also free) you can save playlists (called PCDs) and go back and listen to your favorite tracks whenever you want.

That's all I've got for now, time to go play some avant-garde jazz!

Hey kids, Today I played a bunch of music from Haiti and various other French speaking and otherwise awesome music filled nations. I did have some sweet vinyls that I was going to play, but the WVUM studio is pretty lax on fixing their turntable. I will be transferring some of those vinyl tracks to my computer so you guys can check em out. That's all for now!

Hey there world music lovers! My name is Taylor and I'm a DJ at WVUM 90.5 the University of Miami's radio station. I do a world music show there every sunday from 6:30-8PM and I usually pick a different country to explore every week.
